Melis – Moscato d’Asti

The Moscato d’Asti, the original one.

The aromatic fragrance typical of the Moscato grape gives the wine hints of hawthorn and orange blossom. The straw colour reflects the warmth of the sun.

In the mouth it is explosive, characterized by a good balance between sweetness and acidity. It always invites to the next glass and stimulates curiosity.

🍽️ Best occasion for drinking it?

It is the ideal companion for all desserts but I recommend you to combine it with fresh meats, cheeses with little seasoning and certainly with the famous raw sausage of Bra.

🌡️Temperatura di servizio

Da servire fresco a 10-12 °C.

FAQ

What kind of wine is Canelli Moscato?

Canelli Moscato is a sweet, slightly sparkling white wine produced exclusively from Moscato Bianco di Canelli grapes in a designated area spanning the provinces of Asti and Cuneo in the heart of Piedmont. It is a very young DOCG — the highest Italian quality certification — obtained between 2020 and 2023, and it differs markedly from Asti Spumante despite sharing the same grape variety and the same production regulations. The fundamental difference lies in the winemaking process: in Canelli Moscato, fermentation is halted before the alcohol content rises above 5–6.5% ABV, resulting in a sweet, delicately sparkling wine (maximum pressure 1.7 bar, well below that of sparkling wines), with a richness of natural residual sugars that delivers sweetness without artifice. The aromatic profile is extraordinarily intense and distinctive: acacia flowers, wisteria, orange blossoms, white peach, apricot, sage, and a hint of mountain honey—all a direct legacy of the Moscato Bianco grape, considered the most aromatic in the world. Tojo Winery’s Melis, produced in Santo Stefano Belbo in the Canelli subzone, is an artisanal and family-run expression of this great appellation: small-scale production, manual care of the vineyards, and bottling in the cellar.

What is Canelli Moscato DOCG, and how does it differ from Moscato d'Asti?

Canelli Moscato DOCG comes from one of the historic regions most suited to the cultivation of Moscato Bianco, nestled among the UNESCO-listed hills between Asti and Monferrato.
Compared to Moscato d’Asti, Canelli DOCG refers to a more limited territory and a production deeply rooted in the historical tradition of Moscato. It is precisely this specific origin that gives the wine a recognizable identity, characterized by aromatic elegance, freshness, and a strong expression of the terroir.
For a small winery, producing Canelli Moscato DOCG means honoring a unique local heritage, working in the vineyard with care and respect to preserve the authentic character of these hills.

Can Canelli Moscato DOCG be aged?

Canelli Moscato DOCG is best known for its freshness and aromatic fragrance, but in some vintages it can age very well even after a few years of bottle aging.
Over time, the more floral and fragrant aromas may give way to more complex and elegant notes, while still retaining the typical aromatic character of Moscato Bianco. The potential for evolution depends greatly on the vintage, the work in the vineyard, and the winery’s style.
For us, Canelli DOCG remains a wine deeply connected to the balance and delicacy of the terroir: even over time, it continues to tell the story—in an even more expressive way—of the hills described by Cesare Pavese.

Why is Santo Stefano Belbo considered the historic birthplace of Canelli Moscato?

Santo Stefano Belbo is considered one of the historic birthplaces of Canelli Moscato DOCG because, for generations, these hills have been dedicated to the cultivation of Moscato Bianco, thanks to a region particularly well-suited to the grape in terms of sun exposure, soil, and climate.
Here, the culture of Moscato is part of the region’s agricultural and family history: the vineyards shape the landscape of Monferrato and the UNESCO World Heritage hills, passing down knowledge, traditions, and a way of working that remains deeply connected to the land.
For a small winery, producing Moscato in these hills means continuing an authentic story rooted in territorial identity, shared harvests, and artisanal care at every stage of the process.
